Who We Are

Mission Statement

The Kunhymela House is a community committed to ending homelessness amongst youth in Maputo through education, reintegration, and a communal-focused environment. TKH is intent on providing children suffering on the streets of Maputo with the tools necessary to once again reengage their home communities. TKH provides children with a family-centered atmosphere that promotes the reacquisition of skills necessary to function in a home environment while gaining a skill set and education that increases the likelihood of successful reintegration into home communities. TKH also acts as a safe house for street kids battling illness or injury.

Core Beliefs

Mozambican children are best raised in Mozambican homes. We believe that a child has the greatest chance at success in their own home community, therefore our primary goal with every child we serve is to see them successfully reintegrated into their home communities.

Our culture is not to be impressed on those we serve. Being that we focus on returning children to Mozambican communities we strive not to create a Western-dominated environment that could make the transition back home more difficult for the boys. We seek instead a strong Mozambican influence in our staff and home and require all Western staff to serve in a voluntary role.

We do not discriminate based on ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status or religious beliefs. The Kunhymela House strives to create an environment where unique perspectives and backgrounds are encouraged.

We believe there is always room for one more. Whether it be one more mouth to feed or one more bed to sleep in, we strive to never turn away someone that we have the capacity to help. While our primary focus is on reintegrating street kids, we recognize the overwhelming needs of the Maputo community as a whole and we believe that we exist to serve those even beyond our organizational goals.

The Kunhymela House believes that finances should never inhibit someone from lending or receiving a helping hand. Therefore, we do not require payment for involvement in our work or for care. We instead accept support purely on a donation basis.

Financial accountability is of the utmost importance. Every effort will be made to ensure that the greatest amount of our funding possible is being used to benefit those we are serving. We will also make a concerted effort to have a great level of transparency with our expenditures.

Belief Statement

The Kunhymela House was formed by a group of Christ-followers who believe that the greatest obligation as disciples of Jesus is to serve those in need and to strive daily to incorporate the practices of love, forgiveness and humility into our lives.
We firmly believe that the smallest acts of compassion and humility are used by God to create drastic change here on earth. We may not be big enough to repair all the ills of this wonderful nation, but God is…
